Obituary Anna Herzog (Herzoginanna)

Now I am wandering,
now here, now there,
yet from all the others
I am always driven away:
Until in you I again
find my rest,
I send my songs
to you, O homeland!

Pomeranian Song

There are people who spend their whole lives searching for a place that feels like home. And there are people who carry home within themselves – no matter where life takes them. She was such a person. For her, Pommern was never just a geographical point, but a feeling, a root deeply anchored within her.

Born on August 18, 1953, in Ahaus, the daughter of a worker from Dresden and a housewife from Pommern, she grew up surrounded by stories and memories of this old homeland. She was a woman of inexhaustible curiosity, with a big heart and an impressive life journey. Her path led her through many professions, countless encounters, and ever-new challenges, which she faced with determination and openness. Yet no matter where life carried her – Pommern remained her fixed point.

She was a mother who was always there with advice and support.
A grandmother who spoke of her family with love and pride.
A woman who was never satisfied with simple answers, but always kept searching – for knowledge, for stories, for connection.

When she passed away on November 5, 2024, at the Anna Rizzoli Hospital on the island of Ischia, a journey came to an end – a journey that had taken her to so many places. Yet she had one wish: her final resting place should be where her roots lay.

And so, on November 30, 2024, she was laid to rest in Krosino, in the old German part of the cemetery of Groß Krössin. There, where her family’s history came alive, she has now found her peace.

It was especially significant that her burial was the first in the German language since the place was no longer called Groß Krössin. A moment that connected past and present – and a sign that memory remains alive when it is preserved.

Her loss is painful, but she remains within us – in the memories, in the stories she passed on, in the love for home that she awakened in all of us. This homepage will be continued in her spirit – not only as an archive of the past, but as a living connection to Pommern and to the people who have never forgotten this homeland.

For home is not just a place. Home is what remains.
